LAUNCHING YOUR WEBSITE: A GUIDE TO GOING ONLINE

Having a website these days is almost a necessity to doing business. Whether you’re a retailer, providing a service, or are operating purely online, launching a new website needs the same careful consideration as launching any business.

Write a Website Business Plan

A well thought-out plan is vital to the success of any business or new venture. Who are your target markets and are they online? Are your competitors online, and if so, what do they offer? How will you market your site?
What do you want your website to accomplish? A website can be used as a distribution channel (selling direct to customers) and/or as an advertising or promotional tool, so it's important to know what you what your website to be.
Refer to the How to Write a Business Plan article for guidance on how to write an effective business plan.
If applicable, you’ll also want to consider consulting an accountant and a lawyer for issues to do with ecommerce, taxation, privacy, and other legal rights and restrictions.

Reserve Your Domain Name

Even if you’re not going to be online for several months, you should carefully research and reserve your domain name as soon as you can.
Your domain name doesn't have to be your business name; a location, campaign, or task-driven domain name can be just as effective. Take your time to research your domain name options, and choose a domain name that is simple, easy to spell, memorable, unmistakable, and that you like and that will inspire you and your customers. You might also want to consider reserving both the .ca and .com extensions (to avoid confusion in your market), as well as potential misspellings. Read more about domain name extensions and see domain name tips.

Register Your Domain Name on Key Social Media Networks

It’s hard to turn on the news without hearing about Twitter or Facebook, or to read a business magazine that doesn’t mention LinkedIn. Online marketing efforts are shifting and social media networks have become a viable and, in some cases, an essential online marketing tool.
Your small business may not use these sites yet, but you likely will in the future. Like a domain name, it’s important to register your business and/or domain name on key social media networks.

Research Your Options for Web Development

Launching a website involves many skills and disciplines. Here’s what you’ll need to consider:
  • A website requires design, coding, copywriting, and online marketing. If you’re operating an ecommerce site, or collecting customer information, you’ll also have to take into account backend systems like payment processing and database management. Larger companies can offer a lot of these services, but are more expensive; freelancers usually specialise in one or two areas and tend to charge less per hour or project, but you’ll need a roster of talent.
  • Do your due diligence. Before choosing to work with a company or a freelancer, make sure to ask for references and portfolios. We recommend that you create a request for proposal (RFP) to better communicate your website objectives to your potential suppliers. This can help them give you an accurate estimate of the duration and cost of your website project.
  • Don’t overlook open source applications and tools that are freely available on the web (e.g. WordPress) that can give you a website at the fraction of the cost of building one from scratch.

Get a Contract

A signed legal contract can protect both parties in a web development project, whether you’re working with one company or several freelancers. A contract is a written agreement between you and your suppliers, without which there is no legal proof of the terms and conditions of your project, such as delivery, payment amount, schedule, expectations, type of work, and future support.

Build Your Website

Before proceeding with website development, you should:
  • Create a prototype or design mock-up (called a “wireframe”) and get feedback from your friends, family, and user groups made up of potential customers.
  • During early development, consider the user friendliness of your site’s design and navigation.
  • Ensure your content focuses on your customers’ needs and helps them accomplish what they would like to do on your site.
  • Give your customers a good first impression by having good content and web copy.
  • Make it easy for people to find you online by optimizing your website for search engines.

Stay Current

Read articles and attend seminars on how you can improve your website. By learning about web tools, technologies, and trends as they emerge, you can make better decisions about how to improve your website, and generate more traffic or sales.

HOW TO GET YOUR BUSINESS ONLINE

You know that your business needs a website, but taking your business online can be intimidating when you don’t have any experience with web design or development.
Fortunately the process for getting your business online isn't as complicated as it may first seem to be, and can be broken down into these simple steps:

1. Research and Register a Domain Name

Ideally, you’ll find a suitable domain name for your business at the same time that you choose and register your business name. Use an online domain name registrar to search for and purchase the preferred domain name for your business as soon as possible.

2. Determine What Your Website Will Need to Do for Your Business

Your website is a tool and should only exist if it provides some kind of value for your business. If all your website needs to do is provide basic company information and contact details, then a simple brochure-style website will suit your needs. However, if you need something more extensive that incorporates a blog, third-party plugins, or e-commerce functionality, then the scope of your website project will be much larger.
Make sure that you are very clear about what you need from your website – separating the “must haves” from the “nice to haves” – so you can make an informed decision about picking a website platform to suit those requirements, and to make sure that your website project stays within scope and on budget.

3. Decide Whether to Hire Help

To create a website, you have two choices: you can do it yourself, or you can hire someone to do it for you. If you decide to build your website yourself, pre-designed themes for self-hosted WordPress sites and fully-hosted services such asSquarespace will allow you to do so with little or no knowledge of HTML or other coding languages.
However, while the DIY route may be cost-effective, it can also be very time-consuming. If you would prefer to hire a web designer or developer instead, you have a number of options. On the less expensive end, you can hire a student. Having a student build your website should cost less than hiring an experienced web professional, but keep in mind that they may lack certain skills and their availability may be limited by academic commitments.
Alternatively, you can also hire a freelance web professional, or if your websites requirements are extensive (and your budget can afford it), you may need to hire a web design agency for the most comprehensive set of resources, skills and services.
See How to Design and Build Your Website for more information on how to make the best decision about who to hire to help you build your business’ website.

4. Find a Hosting Company

If you plan on building your website on your own, you’ll need to look at web hosting providers. A web host provides space online for you to store and serve up your website files to visitors.
There are many hosting options available – the host that you choose will depend on how your website is built (for instance, if you’re building your website on WordPress, does the web host support that platform?), and how much bandwidth you will consume every month (do you anticipate a lot of traffic, or do you plan on posting large media files on your site?).
While changing your web host after you’ve launched your site is possible, try to pick one now that supports your current needs, as well as your anticipated future needs.
If you’re working with a web developer or designer, they may provide web hosting as a part of their services. Be sure to confirm this at the outset of your project.

5. Determine What Content Management System You Will Use

If you hire someone to help you build your website, they may have a content management system (CMS) that they prefer for website development.  A CMS provides a way for you to log into and simply update the content on your website without any knowledge of HTML. Some widely used CMSes include Drupal, WordPress and Expression Engine.
Before you proceed with development, make sure that the CMS will suit you needs (ask your web designer or developer for a demo before you’re committed to it) so you can have the control you need to update content on your website without constantly relying on external support.

6. Develop Your Website Content

Unfortunately, website content doesn’t appear out of thin air – somebody has to create it. Never assume that your web developer or designer will do it for you. If you don’t feel comfortable writing effective content and copy for your website, then you may want to hire a copywriter to work with you.
Keep in mind that content includes more than just words – it also includes images, audio, and videos. You’ll want to make sure that any media you post on your website is professional and appropriately placed for the context. Also, avoid stock photos wherever possible. Your customers want to see images that are a true representation of your business.

7. Research Legal Issues

Keep in mind that the rules that to a normal business apply to online business as well, but there are legal concerns specifically related to doing business online, so be sure to consult your lawyer. A legal professional can help you create relevant contracts, website terms and conditions, end user agreements, and anticipate and intellectual property issues.

8. Integrate E-commerce

Do you plan on selling goods or services through your website? If so, you’ll need to decide how you will collect the funds, and if you’ll need a merchant account or payment processor. You’ll likely need a shopping cart tool as well, and you’ll want to verify that the web host you chose can support it. Above all, you’ll want to make sure you have business processes in place to manage and fulfill online orders.
Consider consulting with a web developer for qualified advice on what e-commerce solution will best suit your requirements.

9. Launch and Maintain Your Website

The switch is flipped and your website is live! Now you need to make sure that people can find it and that you’re measuring your online growth.

HOW TO DESIGN AND BUILD YOUR WEBSITE

Designing and building a professional, functional website that showcases your company in its best light is essential to the success of your online marketing efforts.
To make the right decision about how to build your website, you need to know what options are available, and consider all the related costs including hardware, internet access, web design and development, hosting and maintenance, and future growth.

1. Do It Yourself

The least expensive (but likely most time-consuming) option is to design and build the website yourself. From free theme templates for self-hosted to wordpress.org sites, to fully-hosted services such as Squarespace, there are plenty of ways for you to get your website online with little or no knowledge of HTML or other coding languages (though some working knowledge of HTML and CSS may be helpful if you need to customise templates).
As a general best practice, you’ll want to host your website yourself through a web hosting service (who will charge you a monthly fee to keep your website files on its servers). Choosing to host your website using free services such as Tumblr orwordpress.com blogs means that you will subject to their terms of service (which often change), and if they find you in violation of those terms for any reason your website can be taken down. Because your website is such a critical marketing tool for your business, you want to be in control of the space where your website lives.
When you build your own website your primary costs will be a web hosting plan and your time, so if you have minimal knowledge of web design and development it may be worthwhile for you to hire a web professional and spend your time operating and growing your business instead.
Before choosing to build your site yourself, ask yourself: Do I possess the necessary design skills and knowledge of website functionality to launch my site? Am I willing to put in the time to learn how the platform I am building on works, and gain enough web administration skills to maintain the site?

2. Hire a Student

Hiring a student can be a cost-effective option for a small business owner on a budget. A skilled, enthusiastic student can design and build you a basic website, and possibly even advise you on search engine optimization and other internet marketing techniques. The cost of the hiring a student depends on the nature of the relationship. You may be able to hire a student for as little as $25 per hour or even on a contract basis.
Keep in mind, student are still learning not only how to design and build websites, but also about how to interpret a client's wants and needs, and balance them against a site’s required functionality. If your website will require extensive development work, it may be worthwhile to hire a more established professional.
If you do choose to hire a student for your web project, be sure to ask to see a portfolio first. You can find students through local colleges that offer web design certification, such as BCIT, Langara and Capilano College. In addition, there are a number of private schools to choose from. Try searching Google for "web design schools" in your area.

3. Hire a Freelance Web Professional

Hiring a freelance web designer or developer means hiring a professional who has the necessary web design skills and knowledge, but doesn't have the overhead of a traditional design agency.
Freelancers are generally less expensive than a design firm, and offer a direct line of communication – you are only dealing with one individual, as opposed to a multi-person team at an agency. They usually provide trouble-shooting, maintenance and upgrade services at reasonable rates.
However, they may not have all the required development or internet marketing skills you need to satisfy all the requirements of your website project . Additionally, if a freelancer suddenly becomes temporarily or permanently unavailable for work, then you will have to find another web professional to maintain your website – which can be a problem if you don't have access to your files (and your domain name) or your website is built in a manner that makes it difficult for another freelancer to take over.
Costs of hiring a freelance designer/developer vary significantly. Some freelancers charge on a per project basis, but more often charge by the hour. Current rates average $50 to $100 per hour, and the total cost of building your website will depend heavily on the scope of the project.

4. Hire a Design Agency

If budget is less of a concern or you have complex development needs, then you may want the full-service approach that a design agency offers. Agencies will assign your project to a team of professionals which may include a project manager, creative director, designer, developer, and content strategist. This team will work together to ensure all aspects of your web development project are in sync. Web design agencies may also offer print work to ensure their client's online and offline messages are complementary.
Web design firms often charge a flat fee for an entire project, and their hourly rates average from $100 to $150 per hour.

Making the Right Choice for Your Business

There’s no “one size fits all solution” when it comes to building your business’ website. Ultimately, how you decide to build your website – and who you enlist to help you do that – will depend greatly on your specific requirements. Simple brochure-style websites may be suitable for an ambitious DIYer to tackle. However, complex and dynamic sites that require integration with third-party services and plugins will likely require the intervention of a web professional.
Whichever route you take, be sure to map out your website requirements in advance, and remember that making an investment in a well-built website now can save you and your business time and money in the future.

Combining EFT and Law of Attraction for a life of abundance!

Anything Is Possible

If we tune into how the world of energy works.

I need to remember that there are always other possibilities, there are always better possibilities, and when we tune into our highest self and get the best answers for ourselves, this opens up the world of possibilities for us.

Usually, we are only able to consider a narrow range of possibilities because of our limited thinking. We think small because of our past experiences, and of course, because of our fears.

But what if we expanded the range of possibilities available to us?
What if we believed that there were always additional possibilities than the few we typically expect?

What if we could be open to alternate possibilities?

Our lives and our world would open up to so much more success and abundance. We would stop being limited and recognize that Anything Is Possible!

It’s time to stop playing small, to stop thinking small, and to stop limiting our expectations.

Are you ready?

I know it will be worth it for you to believe that  Anything Is Possible!  You’ll notice the difference in your vibration, in your enthusiasm and in the level of creativity that shows up in your work and personal life.

What does this have to do with attracting abundance? When you adopt a new attitude that Anything Is Possible, you are automatically expanding what could show up in your energetic world.  You communicate to the universe that you are open to new ideas and new channels for abundance. Your vibration will immediately feel fresher and more abundant, and the results will be exciting!

Our thoughts, feelings and behaviours carry energy…
Our vibration matters!

Remember that the Universe hears your vibration not your words.  The principles of the Law of Attraction remind us that we will receive more of what we are “broadcasting” to the Universe when we are in alignment with it.  When the universe is able to receive a clear message from you (no energetic or emotional interference) then theLaw of Attraction works in your favour.  So when you believe and act as if  Anything Is Possible the universe will support you.

Below you will find EFT setup phrases to help you be inspired to release your blocks to being able to attract what you want into your life.

When you change your vibration, you will change your life.

Go ahead, raise your vibration
By being inspired to believe

Anything Is Possible!

Dream Big: Live Your Life without Limits

dream big no limits positive thinking your life
The basic rule for success is for you to continue to remind yourself that you are where you are, and what you are because of yourself.  You are in your current situation because you have decided to be there.  You have made the individual choices and decisions that have gotten you to your current place in life.  If you want to go somewhere else or be someone else, it is totally up to you to make the choices and decisions today that will eventually get you there.  And there are no limits.

Positive Thinking Will Change Your Life

Here is another rule:  “If you want your life to get better, you have to get better.”  This simply means that your outer world will be a reflection of your inner world.  If you want your outer world to improve, you must go to work on improving your inner world.
If you want to have better customers and more sales, you must become a better and more personable salesperson.  If you want to have better employees, you must become a better manager.  If you want to have better children, you must become a better parent.  And if you want to have better relationships, you must become a better person.  The great tragedy is that the world is full of people who are trying to change the outside world without going to work on the one thing that they can control, their own thinking!

Change Your Thinking

Here is another rule: “If you change the quality of your thinking, you change the quality of your life.”  And since you can change the quality of your thinking almost infinitely, there are no limits on how you can change and improve every part of your life, in any direction you want to go.
There is a lot of talk today about “positive thinking,” and I think that positive thinking is very important.  It is much better for you to think positively about yourself and your possibilities than for you to think negatively.  But the danger is that positive thinking can quickly turn into positive wishing and hoping.  Positive wishing and hoping can turn a person into a very optimistic and happy failure.  Abraham Mallow said that the story of the human race is the story of men and women selling themselves short, and settling for far less than that for which they are capable.  Don’t let this happen to you.

The Power of Positive Knowing

What is better than positive thinking is “positive knowing.”  This is where you take the steps and do the things that bring you to the point where you absolutely know, with complete certainty, that you can achieve your goals and be the kind of success that it is possible for you to be.  When you reach the point of positive knowing, no matter what happens in the outside world, even if you lose everything you have acquired, you will make it all back again, and more, because you know how to do it in the first place.
I want to share some ideas with you that have been very helpful to me and to many thousands of other highly successful men and women.  These are all ways of thinking and looking at your world that will enable you to become a far more optimistic, confident, and creative individual in everything you do.  These are simple, powerful, proven techniques that you can use to throw off your self-imposed limits and begin moving toward the realisation of your full potential.

Dream Big, You Have No Limits

The starting point of great success and achievement has always been the same.  It is for you to, “dream big dreams.”  There is nothing more important, and nothing that works faster than for you to cast off your own limitations and begin dreaming and fantacising about the wonderful things that you can become and have and do.
A wise man once said, ” You must dream big dreams for only big dreams have the power to move the minds of men.”  When you begin to dream big dreams, your level of self-esteem and self-confidence will increase immediately.  Your self-image improves.  You feel more positive about yourself and your ability to deal with whatever happens to you.  The reason so many people accomplish so little is because they never allow themselves to let go and just imagine the kind of life that is possible for them.

Live your Life to the Fullest

The majority of people are like drones, nowadays. It seems as if they are living their lives in trance – numb sleepwalkers that do the same things day in and day out – while being stuck in various routines that have accumulated during the years. Routines that give them the sensation of stability in an unstable and ever changing world. There is no variety other than the regularly changing television program, new computer and console games or the newest scandals of celebrities and politicians.
People have no time anymore to call their friends and to spend time with them, but waste hours of their valuable time online, on Facebook – checking status messages, addictively playing games, chatting with random strangers or watching videos on YouTube. You can hear people mumble, “I’m in a rush” or “Haven’t got any time” while they rush from their workplaces to their entertainment stations, called home.
People have mastered the skill of multi-tasking and can perform various tasks simultaneously, but they lack the ability to focus on only one thing at a time and wonder why they don’t get anything done or why they aren’t happy with the outcome of their multi-tasked work.

Yet, the state of being a numb sleepwalker can be very promising – after all, all you have to do ilean back and start drifting through life, which can be an exciting journey full of adventurous hours in front of the television or your video console. This is one possible way of life, but there will always be the remaining emptiness within yourself that you will not be able to fill – not with entertainment, not by accumulating riches, gathering tangibles or continuously changing partners. That’s the burden of being a sleepwalker – you won’t reach true fullfilment and consciousness; to put it simple: you aren’t able to fill the emptiness within yourself.

Part I: The Active Mind

Start living your life NOW!

The sleepwalkers I was talking about in the above certainly do fulfill their specific needs for nutrition, security, love, happiness and entertainment, but are they really living their lives – actively and consciously - or are they still dreaming and behaving on auto-pilot? Let’s look at it this way… I’m sure you have heared about the people who had a near-death experience and reported about the phenomenon that they saw their whole lives flashing before their inner eyes, just like a movie. The film that was flashing before their eyes contained all the emotional and exciting moments they had experienced throughout their lives. The only question is: do you really want to see yourself sitting in front of a TV or a computer when “watching the movie of your life”? Watching yourself observing something else, when the “director” zooms into the best moments of your entire life? I certainly don’t! I’d rather prefer to see myself really living my life – not observing the fictional life on the TV screen or playing a fictional role in whatever game.

The courage to live your life to the fullest

All it takes to live your life to the fullest is courage – nothing more and nothing less. This sounds rather minimalist and easy to cope with – but a lack of courage is a key-factor that prevents most people from living their lives to the fullest. These people aren’t necessarily cowards or scared-chicken – not at all – as they are simply being stuck with their quite comfortable everyday routines. To express it metaphorically: there are some dreams that you do not want to end. Courage is a crucial factor – as you cannot live your life to the fullest if you don’t dare to do it or shy the risks that could come with it.

Listening to your heart

The following can be observed ever since in the history of mankind, so it isn’t just a recent trend: young people choose – influenced by the advice from their parents (or friends) – to walk the predetermined path that was selected for their lives – a path that might have been chosen by their parents or dictated by the society they live in – often before they were born. Some others pursue the smell of banknotes and follow where the desire to accumulate as much money and tangibles as possible will lead them. There are many other examples where people make important decisions for their lives solely based on external factors – some earn a living with jobs they absolutely dislike and hate, jobs that might even interfere with their believes, others become lawyers just because their whole family consisted of lawyers for decades. The mistake we make is that we put way too much emphasis on the importance of external factors – such as money, family tradition and honor, etc. – rather than listening to our hearts and following where it leads us.
You don’t necessarily have to break with your family tradition when you follow your heart, absolutely not! But there is a huge difference in between the choice to become a firefighter “because my dad, my grandfather and my great grandfather were fireman as well” or to choose to become a firefighter as it is your true desire and you dreamt of it ever since you were a little child that wanted to help others that are in danger.
Listen to your heart when you make important decisions and try to neglect the promising external factors (money, etc.) just for a moment. Have the courage to follow where your heart leads you! Become aware of the things that your heart desires and ask yourself the question if you really think that your heart might desire something as superficial and material as money, fancy cars and jewellry. When looking behind the scenes you might discover that it isn’t tangibles that your heart truly desires, but – more valuable things such as – true friendship, happinesslove, but also fulfillmentconsciousnessawareness and inner peace with yourself.

Part II: The Importance of Responsibility

Reconciling and accepting the past

Nearly all of our thoughts, questions and worries revolve around events and situations in the past or the upcoming future. The closer you look at it, the more will you realise that only a slight percentage of our thoughts revolve around the present. If you so want, “thinking in the present” is an oxymoron in itself, as the line between past, present and future is continuously shifting, which makes it nearly impossible to continuously think about this very moment. Therefore, nearly all human beings are either very focused on the future and the changes that will come along with it, or clearly living in the past full of regret about the drastic changes in nowadays world, (overlapping does exist as well, of course).

Nevertheless, worrying about the future or struggling with the past – no matter what happened – can be a huge obstacle when it comes to the ambition to live your life in this very moment to the fullest, which might even prevent you from doing so. Accept the past as that what it is, bygone and not changeable. Spending a single second with regret about your past will take you the chance to enjoy this moment, in this second and so on. If you so want, worrying about the past could be seen as a vicious circle; it does not only take you the chance in this very moment to change whatever you dislike, but it also supplies you with another pretty good reason to struggle in the prospective future, aka “Why didn’t I do anything about it when I could?”, etc.

As you can see – worrying about the past and the future can be a vicious circle that occupies your mind with thoughts and situations that aren’t related to this present situation, which finally prevents you from living life to the fullest. The key to success lies in the acceptance of what happened and the reconciliation with the past, the opportunities you’ve missed and with whatever you regret. The realisation that the only way to change anything in life is to take action now, in this very moment, will further help you to reconcile with your past. Living your life to the fullest, in this very moment, cannot be accomplished when mentally living in the past and continuously visualising all the golden opportunities you’ve missed throughout your life.

Don’t pass the buck

The second part of this article was named “the importance of responsibility”, as I believe that it takes a lot of courage but also the willingness to take responsibility to accept what happened in the past and to reconcile with it. After all, it is by far easier to blame other people for your own mistakes and to make specific external influences accountable for the development of your life, rather than acknowledging that it might have been your own fault and seeking the reasons within yourself.
Doing so will take a lot of pressure from your shoulders, it might even be a very good feeling to know that you’re not guilty for negative developments in your life as you can always blame others for it, but it will also let you become a helpless victim. Being a victim does not only make you vulnerable, but it also takes you the last chance to change anything about your current situation – as you clearly do not see yourself as the sole reason for a negative trend, but the victim of it. Accusations will redirect your focus (from doing something about it or making the best of it) towards the problem that might lie many years in the past and can neither be changed nor undone. Taking responsibility for your past and reconciling with it will allow you to gain back the power over your life, which helps you to accept the past, forgive others and to wipe the slate clean, but most important of all: you will start focusing on the present and live in this moment. Make yourself clear that the one who lives in the past and the one who regrets misses the chance – in this moment – to make the best of it, to change it or to start all over again.

Accept the past, let the bygone be bygone and make the best out of your situation. In the end, it depends on you, if you decide to continue to whine about the past, or to make the best of it now, so that you can look back one day with a smile on your face and recognise that everything has come to a good end.

Part III: The Reflective Mind

Dare to be conscious!

Living your life to the fullest consists out of three elements that complete each other – the active part (= taking action), the responsibility part (= taking responsibility for the past) and finally, the reflective part – the ying and the yang of living your life to the fullest, if you so want and the sphere that surrounds it. Living your life to the fullest does not only consist of taking action or accepting the past, but also to live your life in a conscious state of mind, where you invest some time for yourself, to reflect and to think about your life in general. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a restriction, you do not need to stop watching TV or to reduce your internet usage drastically, but it includes your willingness to spend some time with yourself (without distractions), everyday.

Pure honesty towards yourself and your life

Whenever you have taken yourself some time to reflect on your life, it is essential that you are completely honest towards yourself. Ask yourself the question, if you are living – in this moment – the life you have always dreamt of, the life you envisioned as a little child, the dream that has evolved throughout your whole life and became more and more detailed with every day you were alive. Ask yourself if you are happy with your personality, your job and the way you live in general. Are you the creator of your life, do you take control over your life, are responsible for your actions or have you switched to your role as a victim and the one who only reacts towards other peoples actions? Are you living your life with excitement and amazement, curious to discover the deepest depths of life, or do you rely on television to stimulate and entertain you for a given period? Is your life a routine or a daily changing adventure?

All day long, we’re in a rush after all the things we believe are important for us. But, let’s face it… nothing is really important other than this very moment, if we make use of it and enjoy it or not.
We spend too much time living in the “what if” and need to learn to live in the “what is.” ~ Rev. Leroy Allison

Proven Motivation Tactics to Boost your Motivation

How to motivate yourself effectively?

In the following you can find some excellent motivation techniques that will let you know how to motivate yourself in an effective way.

In the following you can find some excellent motivation techniques that will let you know how to motivate yourself in an effective way. First of all I think it is important to differentiate between extrinsic motivation (which comes from the environment of an individual, such as the desire to be appreciated or recognised from others and the motivational support from another person) and intrinsic motivation that is driven by the feelings, needs and goals of individuals. This article will mainly focus on motivation techniques that help you to increase your level of intrinsic motivation; the motivation that comes right from the inside of yourself, which doesn’t require external influences and can be strengthened by applying motivation methods. Nevertheless, let’s get started with the following proven motivation techniques:

Part I: Quick and Easy Motivation Techniques

#1 Music: Effective Motivation to Go

Let’s start with one of the easiest motivation tactic that allows you to increase your motivation within seconds: listening to music. Music can change your emotional state as it elicits emotions within everyone of us, from positive ones that let us feel energized or allow us to feel comfortable and relaxed right up to emotions that cause sadness and anger. The right song at the right time can do wonders in relation to your motivation and can easily be implemented as an effective motivator into your everyday life. However, it is very important to choose the right type of music, as slow ballads or sad songs might have a negative effect on your motivation. Your first choice should always be your favourite songs that make you feel happy, as you associate positive feelings with these. In case you need some inspiration to find more motivational songs you should definitely have a look at some of the Best Motivational Songs from various genres like Rock & Roll, Metal, Pop, Hip-Hop, Rap, Classic and House.
In the following you can find some more motivational songs:

Bill Conti - Gonna Fly Now
Paul Engemann - Push it to The Limit
Queen - We Will Rock You
Kenny Loggins - Danger Zone
ACDC - Thunderstruck

Figure out what types of music get you in an energised and motivated state of mind and use these songs to boost your motivation and to get motivated for the upcoming day! Music as motivator can be easily integrated into your everyday life as you can listen to it in almost every situation: when you are showering, during your ride to work or when you have a short break and need to get energised.

#2 Movies: Source of Motivation and Inspiration

Did you ever felt energised, emotionally charged and ready to take on the whole world after watching an excellent movie? The reason for this is that movies are conceived to arouse all kinds of emotions within us, regardless of whether these emotions are fear, sadness or happiness, enthusiasm and optimism. Especially after having a tough day it can be tremendously helpful to watch a motivational movie to recharge your batteries and to become energised for the next day. Here are five motivational movies that will inspire and motivate you:

1. Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump is the story of a simple minded man, who views life through a child’s eye. The movie shows all the astonishing things he accomplishes in his life and how far someone can go without having limited-beliefs and despite of having to deal with a numerous of setbacks.

2. The Pursuit of Happiness

The classic rags to riches story about a man who pursues his dreams with determination and aspiration, without ever giving up; no matter how often he struggles and how worse his life gets.

3. Life is Beautiful

It’s the story of a Jewish man that is with his little son in imprisonment of the Nazi’s and uses his imagination to save his son from the cruel reality.

4. Rain Man

This movie is about a selfish man, whose father bequeathed his fortune to an autistic brother he didn’t even knew existed.

5. The Family Man

This movie is about a successful man, who one day finds himself waking up in a completely different life, which outlines the life he would be living if he had made different decisions in life than he did.

These movies are amazingly great as they encourage us to think about our lives and let us realise how valuable our lives really are. Even though it might just be a temporary feeling it can be the trigger that helps us to change our lives in a positive way and take control of our live.

#3 Books: Words that Enhance your Incentive

I have discovered for myself that reading a chapter of a book helps me to become motivated again and it often stirs my desire to accomplish my goals. Some phrases ignite enthusiasm and confidence within myself and help me to pursue my goals even more energised than before. Napoleon Hill (“Think and Grow Rich”), Brian TracyTony Robbins and Jim Rohnare some of my favourite authors that motivate me with every phrase of their books/texts.

Part II: Powerful Motivation Techniques

#4 Goals: Pure Motivational Power

After discussing the motivational aspects of music, movies and books it is time to bring up the big guns that will allow you to boost motivation and peak your incentive. The following motivation techniques are by far more powerful than #1, #2 and #3 combined and will help you to maintain the motivation for a longer time, but also require more efforts in order to be established. One of these powerful motivation techniques is to set yourself goals, as they help you to nurture your motivation in an effective way and will remind you the reason you put so much effort and hard work into the pursuit of your dreams. A wisely chosen goal that you really want to achieve allows you to do "whatever it takes" until you have accomplished it, which will increase your stick-to-itiveness and will enable you to reach even the most ambitious aims. However, it is essential that YOU have chosen your very own goals, without letting yourself getting influenced by friends, family members and your partner. Inherited goals that your environment constrained upon you will have no motivational benefit for your life at all, as you will most likely not have the boundless ambition to accomplish these. Therefore it is important to associate positive feelings with your aims, without threats, consequences and constraints. As a side note: the more excited you are to start pursuing your ambitious goals the more motivated you will become.

#5 Rewards: Ignite the Desire

By holding out the prospect of rewards for the accomplishment of my goals I stimulated and motivated myself to achieve even the most ambitious aims and visions without giving up. I consider for myself the process of linking a reward with the requirement of accomplishing a goal to be one of the most effective motivation techniques that I have integrated into my life. By rewarding yourself for achieving an aim you can teach your mind that you will get rewarded (= positive feelings) when you made huge efforts that resulted in the accomplishment of one of your goals: [effort = accomplishment = reward]. By holding out the prospect of a reward you can ignite the desire to accomplish your goal in order to receive the reward. This can be most effective when you try to achieve very ambitious aims as it allows you to develop perseverance and the attitude to do "whatever necessary" until you accomplished the goal. In order to maintain the effectiveness of this motivation technique you will only have to comply with these two rules: 1. Never reward yourself if you haven't accomplished your aim. 2. Adjust the reward to the goal: The more ambitious your goal is the more exciting your reward should be.

#6 Visualization: Peak Motivation

Once you have set yourself some ambitious goals and have held out the prospect of a reward for their accomplishment you can finally make use of visualization techniques that will let you peak motivation. Visualizing is definitely not rocket science, but for some it might take a few attempts to increase the effect of visualization. All you need to do is to imagine yourself achieving what you desire to achieve, e.g. the accomplishment of a goal. The more intensive you can imagine yourself experiencing all the pleasure and excitement the higher will be the benefit from a visualization, as our mind is not able to differentiate between a real situation and an experience we just visualized in a really intensive way. Make sure to choose a comfortable and quite place where you will not get interrupted when you visualize. To increase the motivational aspect of visualizing you need to imagine the accomplishment of your aims as realistic as possible from the first person perspective.

#7 Vision Board: Self-Motivation the Easy Way

I have already mentioned that goals are pure motivational power, but something that will even increase the positive effect of having goals is to create a vision board that includes all your aims, dreams and visions. Furthermore, having a vision board can help you to keep your goals in mind, which is necessary as they won't no longer motivate you as soon as you have forgotten them. Your vision board should include photos of all the goals, aims and dreams you desire to accomplish and be placed in a location where you can have a look at it at least once a day. Preferably you should place it in front of your office desk, home desk or wherever you need to get motivated the most. A vision board will help you to maintain and strengthen your incentive as it will be easier for you to associate excitement and enthusiasm with a bunch of pictures rather than a list of plain emotionless words.

#8 Needs: Know your Motivational Desires

Accordingly to Maslow’s hierarchy of needs everyone of us has unsatisfied needs and desires (from basic to complex ones) that influence our behaviour, whereas satisfied needs do not. As soon as we have satisfied basic needs, such as hunger and thirst we focus towards the satisfaction of the next level of needs, such as safety and health which is followed by friendship and love and thereafter comes the desire for recognition and achievement until we have reached the highest level of needs: self actualisation. Maslow’s hierarchy consists of the following five needs that are listed from the most complex to basic ones:

1. Self-actualization (morality, creativity)
2. Self-esteem needs (achievement, confidence)
3. Love/Belonging (friendship, partnership, family)
4. Safety needs (security of oneself, the family, property)
5. Physiological needs (food, water, breathing)
 Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

To use Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to get motivated you need to be able to identify at what stage of the pyramid you see yourself and match your goals and activities towards the satisfaction of the needs in this particular stage. Professional supervisors make use of Maslow’s hierarchy as well, by motivating their employees accordingly to their individual needs, by providing securities (e.g. job security, health insurances) and by letting team members satisfy their need for acceptance and respect from others.

#9 NLP: Subconscious Self-Motivation?

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how the mind works that encompasses neurology, language and programming; the three most influential aspects that are necessary to let a human experience something. NLP can also be used to peak performance and boost motivation within a few seconds. In order to increase your level of motivation you can apply so called “reconditioning techniques” to establish emotions, such as desire and enthusiasm towards an action and attach these feelings with your goals, which will subconsciously increase your motivation. When you have read the points #4 and #5 you will notice that having goals that are linked to rewards is very similar to this NLP technique, without going too much into detail of the human mind. However, NLP is a study of its own and would go beyond the scope of this article, as there are many important things to consider when exercising NLP techniques.

Part III: Smaller Self-Motivation Techniques

#10 Envision what could happen

I’m not fond of using pain and threats as motivator, but sometimes it can be helpful to envision the negative consequences of not taking action, in an impartial and emotionless way. Doing so will let you realize what you could miss out by not starting to do what needs to be done, which is a great help whenever you lack the motivation to get started. However, it is important not to get your emotions involved with this technique (such as: if you do not exercise you will look ugly, etc.) as this might trigger painful emotions and cause self-constraints, which are huge obstacles when it comes to self-motivation.

#11 Curiosity and Interest

You might have noticed that you felt committed to tasks that you were interested in and that you had the burning desire to accomplish these tasks/goals, as soon as possible. Curiosity and interest are some essential factors that will automatically increase your motivation towards certain activities, tasks and goals. This is only a natural reaction as you associate positive emotions towards these objectives and tasks. Nevertheless, this also means that you might lack motivation whenever you are confronted with something that you are not interested in at all. Luckily you can change this: whenever you are confronted with tasks and objectives that you aren’t interested in you should try to establish curiosity in the very task you dislike. As soon as you are curious about something the interest will follow. In case you are facing some problems in establishing curiosity and interest in something you can also try to visualize the positive outcome and the rewards when you finish a task or accomplish a goal. This will redirect your focus from the task you dislike towards the positive aspects of its outcome as soon as it is accomplished.

#12 Make a Commitment

Talking with someone about your plans or even committing to someone will help you to get started and will provide you an additional boost of motivation as it becomes difficult to change your plans or to put them off without consequences.

Part IV: Extrinsic Motivation

#13 Your Social Environment

All the motivation techniques discussed in Part I, II and III focused on intrinsic motivation hence what you can do to establish and strengthen motivation. However, there is also one external factor that effects your motivation (extrinsic motivation) that you have a slight influence on: your social environment, the people with whom you surround yourself (friends, co-worker, partner, etc.). All these people can have an effect on your mood and your motivation. Just remember how awkward or nerveless you felt the last time you spoke to someone who had a really pessimistic attitude and a lot of negative mindsets. Compare this to how energetic and fortunate you felt the last time you hang around with some of your best friends and had a great time with them. The more energetic and motivated people you surround yourself with the better and motivated you will feel, compared to being surrounded by pessimists or people that complain about everything.

#14 The Environment you are living in

Besides your social environment the environment you are living in can have an influence on your motivation as well. This starts from the room you awake in the morning, to your office or the place you work and the house or flat you are living in. You will notice that a lot of distractions in your room will also complicate the process of getting motivated to start doing something, so as a general rule of thumb we can say that: the less distractions there are in your environment the higher is the possibility to become motivated.

I hope you liked the above named motivation techniques, but please bear in mind that these techniques will only develop their full effectiveness when they are integrated into your daily life.
